Before he was able to understand what the object was, there was an intense blaze of light lingering around and in second everything was destroyed. The light was coming from the magnesium present in the atomic bomb. Yamaguchi suffered from extensive burns all over his back, face, shoulders, etc. Even his eardrums got ruptured, and one of his eyes lost the vision.

Anyhow he survived the night in the backyard of his company and early in the morning reached out to the train station. He took the first train to Nagasaki; his hometown. When he reached home, his wife and children were not able to recognize him all due to the burns. After taking the treatment of his burns from one of his doctor friends, he later reported to the office for work.
He shared the story with the mates and seniors of what happened in Hiroshima, which no one was able to believe. But, in the meanwhile, they all heard the sound of an explosion which was similar to that of the Hiroshima atomic attack.
